The Macin Mountains are the oldest mountains in Romania, formed during the Hercynian orogeny, 380-280 million years ago. Together with Niculita Hills, they are bordered to the north by Glacisul Jijiei and Glacisul Isaccei, to the east by Trestenic Hills, to the south by Glacisul Macinului, and to the west by Jijia, Greci and Cerna-Mircea Voda depressions.
Geologically, the Macin Mountains are made up of granite, shale, greywacke and conglomerates (Carpelit strata), granite and diorite in the highest part, quartzite, phyllite, etc. As a result of long-lasting geological events and erosion, the mountains have the aspect of ruins, not even reaching the elevation of 500 meters. The highest peaks are Tutuiatu (467 m) and Suluku Mare (370 m).
The most important tourist attractions are Culmea Pricopanului ridge with specific granite rock formations, the Ruins of Troesmis Fortress, Lake Iacobdeal, and Cocos Orthodox Monastery. It is worth visiting Macin National Park and nature reserves such as the paleontological site of The fossiliferous place of Bujoarele and Cocos Monastery Nature Reserve. There are also rare animals like the Dobrogea turtle (Testudo graeca ibera) and the European copper skink (Ablepharus kitaibelii).
